art from the headwaters
Oil paintings by artist Roy Stever. Landscapes celebrating the natural wonder of northern New England. Stories of a lifetime from peaks to the coast.
“…it was easy to discover other shared interests, not the least of which was the history of painters on Monhegan. This included Roy as contemporary artist, and my grandfather, George W. Bellows, who in 1911, 1913 and 1914 created hundreds of paintings of various sizes and subjects on the island.
When Roy came back on one gray, foggy afternoon with a just-created plein air work I was impressed with its abstracted atmosphere. The clarity of color, and athletic but well managed knife strokes all worked to capture the reality of Monhegan’s capricious weather that juxtaposes the constancy and stability of rock against the power and eroding hand of water in an atmosphere of ever changing color and light. These qualities may have triggered memories of Bellows, but they are also totally unique, unstudied and fresh. Thankfully, a Roy Stever seascape is much more affordable than a Bellows, and I happily bought it.”

Meet The Artist
Roy’s paintings capture the bold edge of nature and interpret the natural forces at work; a wind before a storm, alpine flowers exploding in color above the tree line, or the cold reality of weathered granite and an unforgiving coast.

Marking Time in the Wild
oil paintings of northern New England by artist Roy Stever
This show takes us to well-known places such as Mt. Washington in New Hampshire and Katahdin in Maine, to lesser known coastal features of Maine - from Petit Manan and Schoodic Point (Acadia National Park) in the north to Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in the south. Also featured are dramatic scenes of the headlands and coves on Monhegan Island. In New Hampshire, works from the artist’s hometown are painted from a local point of view of the White Mountains and its headwaters. There are pieces from Vermont, as well, including a quirky summit named “The Owl” and, of course, a Green Mountain pond and a Waitsfield cow.
Many of the original works above are available and new paintings will be added to this site on a regular basis. Signed giclee archival prints are available, or may be ordered, for all of the posted pieces. Please make inquiries regarding availability to:
